Imco General Purchases the First RoboVibe in the PNW!

In January 2013, Imco General approached me with their dilemma- On this Everett, WA Highway job, they have limited space to properly sling up and drive their PZ sheet piles. So they need to be able to pick, load, and drive the sheets in one fell swoop with one piece of equipment, an operator, and a couple of ground guys. The obvious choice? The APE RoboVibe vibratory driver and extractor. With this unique excavator-mounted vibro, they would be able to pick up the sheets from the ground with the patented side-grip clamps and drive them from either the side or the top of their sheets. After some short talk of the advantages of the RoboVibe over the HMC SP-60 Sonic SideGrip Hammer, Imco General Construction finalized the purchase and received their brand new APE RoboVibe in early April. This is the first and only RoboVibe purchased in the Pacific Northwest. I had the personal pleasure of visiting Imco General at their Ferndale, WA office/yard and had the opportunity to observe the RoboVibe in action as they drove some PZC-26 sheet piles in their yard with their John Deere 330 excavator. This was an interesting as well as a very educational experience as I have never had the opportunity to see a RoboVibe in action before. Imco General was satisfied as well as impressed with the final product; and they will be utilizing it on the Everett Highway job this upcoming May. Hitting the Mark with the 100K Drill

Dewitt Construction had few big holes to drill in Hillsboro OR. Holes were 30” diameter and 85’ deep. The 100K drill was just coming out of production and this was a perfect place to put this newly designed drill. This project in Hillsboro was in one of the INTEL facilities, and was very difficult for myself and Scotto Gray, one of the designers for this Drill, to get on site for an equipment evaluation. Speaking from experience, it is not every day you walk onto a job site with a “prototype” piece of foundation equipment and the super intendant says, with a look a complete satisfaction in his eye, “don’t change a thing, this has got to be the best drill I have ever used”. So we watched the drill work for a couple of hours, everything going just like clockwork. And as the drill approached the 40’ mark Jeff, the Super on site described the material from 45’ to 85’ as a very stiff clay, resembling “bay mud” as Jeff described it. This material was so sticky and heavy that it would not carry itself up the flight, they would take 10’ bites and bring the flight out of the hole and have to remove it with a mini-excavator. The drill has been running in APE 37 inch U leads which the customer liked so well they are buying this set of leads. There were 60 holes drilled and the 5 inch grouting system was used to pump grout at pressures averaging 1000-1500 psi.

An Evaluation of the Impacts of Specific Anthropogenic

It is well established that certain anthropogenic noises have a severe effect on whales. Many sounds that humans introduce into the sea today are without precedent in the evolutionary history of marine mammals and other ocean life. Seismic testing associated with oil and gas exploration, military SONAR, and other industrial sources of ocean noise have injured or killed dolphins and whales in many instances. Additionally, behavioral impacts can also be severe, with animals interrupting feeding, nursing, or reproductive activity to flee from disruptive or painful sounds. There is also evidence that whales may be subject to “masking,” where some types of noises interfere with their ability to communicate with each other. As the military and industrial producers of these sounds are required by law in some countries to prevent impacts to marine mammals, there has been considerable debate and litigation in response to this continuing problem. Various mitigation schemes have been proposed, but they have not proven effective in eliminating harm to whales. Despite a wealth of information demonstrating the need to address multiple characteristics of sound, such as form, frequency, and periodicity, mitigation levels have thus far focused only on signal amplitude, or volume. Many of the studies have also been focused on physiological thresholds such as “threshold shift” using sinusoidal-derived signals which may not accurately reflect the types of anthropogenic noises to which whales are

An APE is Spotted in Newfoundland

Trident Construction recently purchased a new APE D19-42 and leads to add to their piledriving capability. I recently visited their jobsite to set it up and watched the hammer run flawlessly. Trident is driving pipe piles as part of a Canadian Coast Guard pier reconstruction. APE has been enjoying an increased presence in Canada and look forward to continued expansion of business with our Canadian friends.

Us Wick Drain Drives It Home With The Largest Marine Wick Drain Job In The World

US WICK DRAIN a Leland NC based company has just completed the largest marine barge installation wick drain project that has ever been done in the world. This project is part of the first phases of construction for a new port facility at “Craney Island” in Norfolk Virginia. US WICK DRAIN under direction of president Mark Palmatier installed 12,150,000 lf of wick drains in 6 months using the APE wick drain installation machines. Now that’s 6 months with 2 rigs 24 hours a day 6 days a week! That’s a lot of wick drains. The longest wick drains were 150 ft. in length. Great Lakes dredging dumped a drainage layer of sand in the proposed wick drain area with hopper barges. The wicks will be placed and more sand dumped on top of them. In order to place the wick drains in the correct locations on the water 2 barges had to be converted to have a grid all the way through the decks of the barges using steel pipe from the top deck all the way through the bottom. Each barge had a wick drain machine / rig on the deck. The barges would be surveyed into position and secured in position, and then each machine would go down the deck installing a wick drain in each provided hole. Once these wick drains are installed and pre-loaded the engineers predict they will have about 21 feet of settlement. These wicked areas will support a series of dikes for the new Craney Island port. APE / J&M 110K Drill Test Pile

Ebsary Foundation Company of Miami, FL installed the first test pile for the US Army Corps of Engineers Herbert Hoover Dike Culvert 1 & 1A Rehabilitation project along Lake Okeechobee in Moore Haven, FL this past week. Ebsary purchased the drill late last year with a new 765 HP APE Power unit and a new APE Model 300 Vibratory Driver / Extractor. The demonstration, reaction and test piles were all 24? diameter and ranged in length from 88 - 9 3 ft. The piles took approximately 14 cubic yards of high strength grout with average drilling and pump time of 25-35 minutes. AUI Teams Up with APE to Drive the Piles for the Largest Solar Panel Farm in Texas

AUI is building the largest solar panel farm in Texas using three APE DHJ85 pilerigs. The piles are 6"x9lbs per ft. h- beams that are 20' long. The job consists of 26,400 h-piles and AUI is averging between 125 and 150 piles per day per rig. This solar farm will generate 30mw of power which is enough to power 12k to 18k homes once it is complete. Matt Even who is the Assistant Civil Project Manager for AUI on this project says "The equipment provided by American Piledriving Equipment out of Conroe Texas has worked great on this job! The combination of service and service response time has been critical to the excellent performance and production of the DHJ 85's."

San Francisco, The City by the Bay

San Francisco, the city by the bay. California is steadily rebuilding some of its world renown monuments. Pier 19 located in San Francisco California is one of them. The rebuilding of pier 19 has been long overdue with tourism still in full swing with cruise ships coming and going out of the port. After the demoltion of the pier, the first order of things is, of course, the foundation. Seen here, Power Engineering of Northern California is antalling 72” diameter steel pipe pile 160’ long with a 1” wall thickness. Driving these steel casings wasn’t going to be easy with all the restrictions enforced on the job. Tight work space with little room to manuever and all the regulations involved made this job a chelleng. So when they decided to take on the job, they called APE to get the equipment they needed. With the tough Merrit Sands and the sticky Bay Mud here in the bay, they chose the APE 600 Vibro to do the job. And of course the 600 vibro wouldn’t let them down, it got the pile down!

Industry Canada Reports on Flying APE Vibratory Hammer on the Wisconsin River

Piling Industry Canada published the story below on the Henkels and McCoy job on the Wisconsin River. The projects APE has gone airborne with Erickson Air-Crane in the past have always been challenging for the crews since jobs like this are so infrequent. American Transmission Co and Henkels & McCoy did a great job with the challenges the project had to offer. We are happy that our J&M 28-35 and Helitemplate were able to help these guys get the job done.

Dozens of APE 200 Vibratory Pile Driver/Extractors Rushed to UAE

MASSIVE FAILURES OF OUR COMPETITION'S MACHINES PROMPTS APE BUILD UP IN UAE

APE Austria has begun a massive shipment of new APE Model 200 vibratory pile driver/extractors to the UAE. This is in response to recent electronic and overheating of our competition's so-called new units in hot weather conditions. APE machines are will known for their simplicity and ability to handle both the hot Saudi Arabian sun and the cold of Alaska. The secret is our unique kidney loop cooling circuit which can be reversed in cold weather.

APE units come with massive heat exchangers and a special kidney loop oil cooling system that keeps the machine running even in 125 degree temperatures. APE developed a simple electrical system to mate with the advanced Tier III CAT engines. We avoided adding fancy touch screen panels that are subject to code failures that shut the unit down and require re-programming to get started again. APE machines are simple yet advanced. APE China (Shanghai Zhenli) Completes Successful Summit in Shanghai, China

Nearly 400 contractors, engineers, and university research departments gathered in Shanghai this week for the "3rd China International Piling and Deep Foundations Summit 2013." The summit showcased many new foundation techniques in the foundation industry in China. David White, Managing Director of APE China (Shanghai ZhenLi), was invited to present APE's multi-linked vibratory hammer technology most recently used on the HongKong-Macau-Bridge project to drive 72 foot diameter piles as well as innovations for the wind pile industry foundations. David White was the first foreigner since the Piling summit started in 2001 to give a 30 minute technical speech in only Mandarin Chinese without the aid of a translator. Many design engineers are beginning to think big about what can be done with vibratory hammer technology and the brand of APE is quickly sinking into the hearts and minds of Chinese engineers who want to design huge projects. Other than branding APE as a world leader in vibratory hammer technology, many in attendance were small and private contractors interested in driving steel pipe and sheet piling using smaller vibratory hammers. Modular Vibrating of Monopiles for Offshore Wind Farm Riffgat Halfway June APE Holland started on the North Sea near the German island of Borkum with a special offshore project, vibrating 30 steel piles (monopiles) on which 30 windmills will be installed. The piles will be driven with the Super Quad Kong (SQK), an innovative and modular vibratory driver/extractor consisting of four APE vibros, which are connected to four hypermodern powerpacks, providing a total eccentric moment of 920 kg-m. By using the SQK vibratory hammer it is able to drive these monopiles environmentally friendly in a single run in the correct position at the bottom of the sea. Strict Environmental Regulation/Rules APE Holland is pleased that the contractor Seaway Heavy Lifting choose the option of using a vibratory hammer. “By choosing this innovative way of vibrating, APE Holland can comply to the strict environmental rules which apply in Germany,” explains Martijn Kleine, Sales Manager at APE Holland. “The damage to the environment by noise and vibrations remains within acceptable limits.” By using the traditional piling techniques with the conventional hydraulic hammers the noise is at a level that it causes major damage to marine life. “There are various solutions to reduce the noise, but it does imply that the piles have to be vibrated first,” said Martijn Kleine.
